The Nettle Dress screening was a great success!
On Sunday, October 29, 2023, Plants Are Teachers and the Vancouver Island Fibreshed hosted a screening of the documentary The Nettle Dress at The Spool Sewing Studio in Courtenay. Registration filled quickly, with people joining from all over the Island.
The participants were treated to a nettle processing circle before the screening. Juliana Bedoya (Plants are Teachers) brought a huge amount of material for people to try processing, including freshly cut nettle stalks, dried nettle stalks, and stalks that had been retted in two different ways. We split the stems, scraped them, and then learned how to make simple cordage from the fibres that were released.
After playing with fibre for a while and looking at all the demonstration materials, we moved into the main sewing studio where we watched the lyrical documentary. It was a great experience, bringing together like-minded people from across Vancouver Island.
