Continuing on from our Spring 2024 challenges of sewing and working with raw fibre, we now have some new challenges for Summer. We’d love you to take on these challenges to learn new skills and become more comfortable sourcing your materials from our region.
Participants are encouraged share their experiences via social media using #VIFibreshed and #VIFChallenge and in the Vancouver Island Fibreshed Community Facebook group, or via email to info@vancouverislandfibreshed.ca – we’ll share some of your photos and stories in the next newsletter and on blogs on the VIF webpage.
For June through September 2024:
- Dye something! Summer is a great time to play with colour. Simmer some dye plants from your garden or from roadside weeds, strain out the bits, and then add your yarn or fibre. See what happens! Some dyes need mordants to ‘stick’ to your fibre so make sure to do a bit of research first.
- Try making a felted project from raw fleece (wool, alpaca, mohair), from prepared fibre, or from commercial yarns that you’ve crocheted / woven / knitted and then fulled to size. Not all kinds of fibre will felt so make sure to try a little swatch before committing to a whole project. See Bobbie’s felted vest (above and on the blog) for some inspiration.
Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more inspiration as the season progresses. Please let us know how things work out! Share your work via email (info@vancouverislandfibreshed.ca) or social media (#VIFibreshed and #VIFChallenge). Our Facebook group is open to all. Selected submissions will be posted in future blog posts.
